Subject: Facts re UCCB situation
I received the messages that were sent out on Friday, January 19
via my sister. It is of great concern to me that UCCB has "done away with
the position of University College Librarian." Yes, I need a job so if
anyone knows of one please let me know, but the issue that is of concern to
all of you and to me is that they have done away with the position. Who
ever heard of a university without a university librarian!! Below is a
series of events that led to the position "becoming redundant."
- March 6, 2000 I went on sick leave and it was arranged that the
library would repot to another senior administrator, Robert Campbell, Dean
of Research and Development, Academic Institutes. Prior to holding this
position Robert was in the Political Science Dept., he IS NOT a librarian.
- May 29, 2000 I went on to Long Term Disability.
- In late November, 2000 my dr. informed Maritime Life that I
could return to work at the end of January, 2001
- December 13, 2000 I met with a Reabilitation Officer from
Maritime Life to plan my return to work. She met/talked with Lois Devoe,
Interim Director, Human Resources on the same day regarding this issue. We
made a follow-up appoinrment for January 17, 2001 and Lois was informed of
this.
- Januray 10/11? Suzanne Drouin's (Executive Vice President)
secretary called to arrange a meeting with me for Jan. 16, 2001. I was
given the impression by the secretary that it was about returning to work.
- Januray 16, 2001 I met Lois and suzanne at the Cambridge Suites
and was told that as a result of restructuring "the position of University
College Librarian was being done away with." the meeting took about 12
minutes.
- January 16, 2001 I let a faculty member know what had happened
and as a result an e-mail went to all faculty and Mike Manson, President of
FAUT was informed.
- January 19, 2001 I received a letter which stated the following:
The purpose of this letter is to confirm that as a result
of a change in organizational
structure, the responsibilities of the position of
University College Librarian at the
University College of Cape Breton have been combined with
other functions and the position
of University College Librarian, as a discrete position,
has become redundant.
This change is effective immediately and you are now
relieved of all your duties as
University College Librarian.
- Robert Campbell's title was changed to Dean of Research and
Library Services
It is my hope that the library community will be concerned that
this has taken place and will express its dismay to Dr. Scott with a copy
to Dr.Michael Manson, President of FAUT at the same address, his e-mail is
<mmanson@uccb,ns.ca>.
