Soaring to Excellence 2003 - Teleconference
Building Another Bridge: Equal Access to Technology for Special Populations Friday, November 15, 2002 (1:00-3:00pm AST)
Local site hosted by Nova Scotia Provincial Library
************
Effective use of technology has become a critical component of information retrieval. Does this leave the blind, the deaf, the elderly and any other group with special challenges on the far side of a new digital divide? During the two hour teleconference, presenter Daneen Richardson, Reference Librarian at the Graham Hospital School of Nursing in Canton, Illinois, will offer a practical, humanistic approach to providing access for special populations.
This session will provide specific information on how to bridge that divide for individuals challenged in ways that we CAN accommodate if only we have the requisite insight, persistence, compassion, and knowledge. Building Another Bridge will offer very specific suggestions to insure that all individuals have equal access to information, regardless of the medium through which that information is presented.
Following the broadcast participants at the Provincial Library site will have the opportunity to try some of the latest adaptive technology first hand, as Peter Webster, Head, Information Systems, Patrick Power Library, Saint Mary's University, will be on hand to demo some of the new software.
Details are as follows:
- Date: Friday, November 15, 2002, broadcast from 1-3pm (hands-on activity to follow broadcast)
- Place: Nova Scotia Provincial Library (Classroom), 3770 Kempt Road, Halifax
- Registration will be on a first come first serve basis, to a maximum of 50 people.
