On May 11th the Nova Scotia Provincial library will be hosting a
College of DuPage teleconference on “The Relevance of Libraries in a
Digital Age”. This event will be co-sponsored with the Canadian
Association of Special Libraries and Information Services (CASLIS)
Atlantic Chapter. 

James G. Neal, the Vice President for Information Services and
University Librarian at Columbia University, will assemble a panel to
discuss the future relevance of libraries as we know them. The digital
age has been with us long enough to make some practical predictions of
how traditional roles of libraries will change in information selection,
acquisition, synthesis, navigation, dissemination, interpretation and
archiving. New responsibilities in information aggregation, publishing
education, research and development and policy advocacy will be
explored. It promises to be a lively and provocative session.

James G. Neal works with the Electronic Publishing Initiative at
Columbia (EPIC) and the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and
Learning (CCNMTL). He serves on key academic, technology, budget and
policy groups at the University. Jim is a frequent speaker at national
and international conferences, consultant and published researcher with
a focus in the areas of scholarly communication, intellectual property,
digital library programs, organizational change, staff turnover, and
fundraising. He has worked on the editorial boards of journals in the
field of academic librarianship, and has worked on copyright policy and
advisory groups for universities and professional and higher education
associations. 

Following the broadcast David McDonald, Systems and Library Technology
Manager, Nova Scotia Legislative Library and Past-President of CASLIS
Atlantic, will speak about the concept of an electronic depository or
archive for Nova Scotia electronic documents.
