The Atlantic Provinces Library Association administers the Carin Somers
Scholarship Trust.  The trust provides an annual scholarship in her name
to assist a Canadian citizen who is an Atlantic Provinces resident needing
financial assistance to undertake or complete the academic requirements
leading to a degree of Master of Library Science. 

The award will normally be announced at the Ordinary General Meeting held
at the Annual Atlantic Provinces Library Association Spring Conference. 

The successful applicant will have been accepted in an accredited School
of Graduate Studies as a candidate for a masters degree in Library
Science. 

Selection of the recipient will be recommended by a committee of the four
Provincial Vice Presidents and the President-Elect to the Executive
Committee.

CARIN ALMA E. SOMERS
1934 - 1990

Carin Alma E. Somers was the Provincial Librarian for Nova
Scotia from 1974 to 1987. Her working career as a librarian
started in 1958 when she went to work at what was then the
Halifax Memorial Library. She worked there both before and
after going to library school at the University of Toronto.
Carin became Chief Librarian of the Halifax County Regional
Library in 1967 and oversaw the rapid growth of that region.
In 1973, she was appointed Supervisor of Public Libraries
(NS Provincial Library) and in 1974, Provincial Librarian.

Carin was always a tireless supporter of public service,
libraries and both CLA and APLA. During her time as
Provincial Librarian, 100% of the population of Nova Scotia
became served by public librarians. She was president of
APLA, a second vice-president of CLA, a guest lecturer at
Dalhousie School of Library and Information Services and a
frequent speaker at trustees meetings. In 1988, APLA
honoured Carin with its Merit Award. Carin died in 1990. The
terms of her bequest are a demonstration of her interest in
people and in the profession which she chose.

La Atlantic Provinces Library Association gère la Bourse d'études
postsecondaires Carin Alma E. Somers Scholarship Trust.  Chaque année, le
fond distribue une bourse en son nom afin de venir en aide à un(e)
citoyen(ne) canadien(ne)  qui demeure dans l'une des provinces de
l'Atlantique et qui a besoin d'aide financière pour entreprendre ou
terminer la maîtrise en bibliothéconomie. 

Le(la) boursier(ère) sera normalement annoncé(e) à la réunion générale
annuelle tenue lors de la conférence annuelle du printemps de la Atlantic
Provinces Library Association. 

Le (la) boursier(ère) aura été accepté(e) comme étudiant(e) à la maîtrise
en bibliothéconomie dans une institution postsecondaire accréditée. 

La sélection se fera par un comité composé de quatre vice-présidents(es)
provinciaux et du (de la) président(e)  désigné(e) du comité de direction.

CARIN ALMA E. SOMERS
1934-1990

Carin Alma E. Somers a été la bibliothécaire provinciale de la
Nouvelle-Écosse de 1974 à 1987.  Sa carrière de bibliothécaire a débuté en
1958 lorsqu'elle est entrée au service de ce qui était alors la Halifax
Memorial Library.  Elle a travaillé à cet endroit avant et après avoir
suivi son cours à l'Ecole de bibliothéconomie de l'Université de Toronto. 
En 1967, Carin est devenue la directrice de la Halifax County Regional
Library et a contribué à la croissance rapide de cette région.  En 1973,
elle a été nommée Superviseure de la section de bibliothèques publiques du
Service de bibliothèques de la Nouvelle-Écosse et en 1974, elle devenait
la directrice provinciale. 

Carin a toujours été une ardente défenseure des services publics, des
bibliothèques ainsi que de la CLA et de l'APLA.  En tant que directrice
provinciale, elle a vu toute la population de la Nouvelle-Écosse, sans
exception, avoir accès à des services de bibliothèques publiques.  Elle a
été présidente de l'APLA, vice-présidente de la CLA, une conférencière
invitée à la Dalhousie School of Library and Information Services et, bien
souvent, oratrice aux réunions de commissaires.  En

1988, l'APLA a honoré Carin de son Prix de Mérite.  Carin est décédée en
1990. Les conditions de son leg sont la preuve de l'intérêt qu'elle
portait aux gens et à la profession qu'elle avait choisie.
