OPEN

The New Brunswick Public Library Service (NBPLS), the central agency
responsible for the management of the public library system in the province,
is searching for a dynamic individual with a demonstrated enthusiasm for the
mission of public libraries, to serve as Cataloguing Librarian at our
provincial office in Fredericton.

DUTIES:  Reporting to the Head of Cataloguing and Technical Services, the
Cataloguing Librarian performs original and copy cataloguing in English and
in French for inclusion in a provincial union catalogue of more than 1.9
million items.  The union catalogue is shared by the provincial office, the
5 regions, 62 public libraries and 4 bookmobiles.  As a professional
librarian, the Cataloguing Librarian is expected to assume a leadership role
and to provide support to the Head of Cataloguing and Technical Services.

The Cataloguing Librarian serves as a resource person for the creation and
validation of bibliographic records including classification, subject and
authority control in accordance with national and international standards;
assists with catalogue maintenance of the DRA Inlex 3000 automated library
system; assists in the training of cataloguing staff on new initiatives;
researches advancements and products that may improve cataloguing
procedures; participates in provincial committees and in automation,
cataloguing and technical services planning; contributes to the formulation
of cataloguing policies and procedures; produces reports from the database;
manages provincial research and other special projects as required.  The
successful candidate will assist in planning the migration to a new
automated library system.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must possess a Masters degree in Library and/or
Information Studies from a school accredited by the American Library
Association. A working knowledge of AACR2, LC and Laval subject headings,
Dewey Decimal Classification, LC rule interpretations and the principles of
authority control is necessary. They must have a good understanding of
technical services, cataloguing and classification standards, indexing and
abstracting and database management. Strong knowledge of library automated
systems, e-mail, the Internet and Ms-Word is required.  Written and spoken
competence in English and in French is required for both positions.

The successful candidate will have strong technical and communication
skills, and will demonstrate initiative and an ability to work both
independently and in a team environment.  Additional training in Information
Technology would be an asset.

Some travel may be required and applicants must possess a valid driver's
license. The position will involve some lifting.

CONCOURS PUBLIC

Le Service des bibliothèques publiques du Nouveau-Brunswick (SBPNB),
l'agence centrale responsable de la gestion du réseau des bibliothèques
publiques dans la province, est à la recherche d'une personne dynamique et
enthousiaste à l'égard de la mission des bibliothèques publiques pour agir à
titre de catalogueur ou de catalogueuse à son bureau provincial situé à
Fredericton.

FONCTIONS :   Relevant de la chef des services de catalogage et des services
techniques, le catalogueur ou la catalogueuse effectue du catalogage
original et dérivé en français et en anglais afin d'entrer les données
bibliographiques dans le catalogue collectif provincial qui compte plus de
1,9 million de documents. Le catalogue collectif est utilisé conjointement
par le bureau provincial, 5 bureaux régionaux, 62 bibliothèques publiques et
4 bibliobus.  À titre de bibliothécaire professionnel(le), le catalogueur ou
la catalogueuse assume un rôle de leadership et appuie la Chef des services
de catalogage et des services techniques.

Le catalogueur ou la catalogueuse agit à titre de personne-ressource pour la
création et la validation des notices bibliographiques, y compris la
classification, les vedettes-matière et les notices d'autorité conformément
aux normes nationales et internationales; participe à l'entretien du
catalogue dans le système automatisé DRA Inlex 3000; participe à la
formation du personnel des services de catalogage concernant les nouvelles
initiatives; demeure à l'affût des développements et des nouveaux produits
permettant d'améliorer les procédures de catalogage; agit à titre de membre
de comités provinciaux et participe à la planification de l'automatisation
et des activités des services techniques et de catalogage; contribue à
l'élaboration des politiques et procédures de catalogage; produit des
rapports à partir de la base de données; et gère des projets spéciaux et de
recherche d'envergure provinciale selon les besoins. La personne choisie
aidera également à planifier la migration des données vers un nouveau
système automatisé.

CONDITIONS DE CANDIDATURE : Les candidat(e)s doivent détenir une maîtrise
d'un programme de bibliothéconomie et/ou sciences de l'information reconnue
par l'«American Library Association». Ils/elles doivent aussi avoir une
connaissance pratique des règles AACR2, des vedettes-matière Laval et LC, de
la classification décimale Dewey, de l'interprétation des règles de LC et
des principes de notice d'autorité. Ils/elles doivent posséder une bonne
connaissance des normes de classification et de catalogage, de l'indexation,
de l'analyse documentaire et de la gestion de base de données. Ils/elles
doivent également posséder de solides connaissances en matière
d'automatisation de bibliothèque, ainsi que du courriel, d'Internet et
Ms-Word. La connaissance du français et de l'anglais, à l'oral et à l'écrit,
est essentielle pour les deux postes.

La personne choisie devra posséder d'excellentes compétences techniques et
aptitudes pour la communication, avoir de l'initiative et pouvoir travailler
de manière autonome et en équipe.  Une formation complémentaire en
technologie de l'information serait un atout.

La personne choisie pourrait être appelée à se déplacer et doit posséder un
permis de conduire valide. Le travail exige de soulever du matériel à
l'occasion.
