QUALIFICATIONS:
Memorial University is seeking an energetic, creative individual, with an
interest in the evolving services of academic libraries, and the flexibility to
enjoy a variety of cataloguing work in a changing environment of practice. The
successful candidate will have a strong liberal arts background and a degree
from an ALA accredited graduate program. He/she will have excellent analytical
and problem-solving skills and an ability to work effectively both independently
and as a member of a group. Reading knowledge of one or more Western European
languages will be desirable, as will course work in cataloguing.
DESCRIPTION:
The Bibliographic Control Services Division is located in the Queen Elizabeth II
Library, the central library in Memorial's system. The Division, with a staff
of five librarians and twenty-three library assistants, is the largest of the
technical services units in the library system and is responsible for
acquisition and cataloguing of resources in all formats. Memorial's librarians
are forward-looking professionals, committed to high standards of record quality
and public service. As one of a collegial group of cataloguing librarians, the
successful candidate will perform original cataloguing in a range of formats and
subject areas, will create records for NACO (the Name Authority Cooperative
Project), and may participate in non-MARC metadata initiatives. Cataloguing
standards include Library of Congress classification and subject headings;
National Library of Medicine classification and MESH subject headings; AACR2 and
Library of Congress Rule Interpretations. Materials for original cataloguing
include serials, electronic resources, government documents, scores and sound
recordings, audio-visual materials, maps, rare books, and academic theses.
Works catalogued may be for specialized collections such as marine studies, or
medicine and health, or may be unique titles for a comprehensive collection
relating to Newfoundland and Labrador. The Memorial University Library is a
Sirsi site.
Each librarian is expected to participate in shaping the Division's role in the
library and to take an active interest in carrying out its goals. In addition,
the successful candidate may have an opportunity to participate in collection
development activities.

BENEFITS:
An appointment at the rank of Librarian I or II is anticipated. Based on
experience and qualifications, salary floors are $37,667 and $43,543
respectively . Memorial offers standard academic benefits including
opportunities for development time.
