GERARD V. LA FOREST LAW LIBRARY
The Gerard V. La Forest Law Library (GVLLL) invites applications for a
permanent tenure-track Librarian position, which is expected to be
filled at the rank of Librarian I or II. The anticipated start date
for this position is January 1, 2008. This position, which combines
both technical and public services responsibilities, will provide the
successful candidate with the opportunity to develop expertise in many
facets of librarianship within a dynamic law library environment.
UNB-Fredericton, located in New Brunswick´s beautiful capital city, is
a comprehensive university offering a variety of degree programs, many
of which now have a law-related component. UNB´s Faculty of Law, the
second oldest common law school in the Commonwealth, has been ranked
consistently as one of the country´s best undergraduate law (LLB)
programs. The GVLLL serves the legal information needs of law
students, faculty and staff as well as the rapidly increasing
law-related requirements of the larger UNB community and the adjacent
St. Thomas University. The law library is integrated fully into the
daily life of the law school and is a highly respected partner,
collaborator and innovator in the educational experience of our law
students and in the teaching and research roles of our law faculty.
Reporting to the Head Law Librarian, this position is responsible for
supervising the library´s technical services operation, for the
selection and organization of the library´s government documents
collection, for sharing in the provision of reference, student
orientation, and bibliographic instruction services, and for
participating in library decision-making in collaboration with the
other law librarians.
DUTIES:
<Directs the technical services function at the law library. This
includes supervision of cataloguing, acquisitions, and serials
control, as well as doing original cataloguing. The position also
involves taking a lead role in investigating options for increased
automation of our technical services operations, such as electronic
(EDI) ordering, purchasing of shelf-ready materials, and automated
serials control.
<Represents the law library at university-wide technical services
librarians´ meetings, particularly in regard to the use of the SIRSI
UNICORN integrated library system and the implementation of system
enhancements.
<Provides metadata/cataloguing for legal electronic resources
purchased by the law library, and works with UNB Libraries systems
staff to refine procedures for bulk importing of catalogue records for
items in electronic legal databases.
<Maintains the government documents collection by choosing items for
acquisition, providing bibliographic access and detailed holdings
information, and organizing the collection for convenient use.
<Provides reference and research consultation to library users, in
collaboration with the other librarians.
<Conducts library tours, orientation sessions, and bibliographic
instruction, in collaboration with the other librarians.
<Other duties may include work on the law library´s Digital Archives
initiative, upgrading content on the library´s website, and assisting
with the implementation of the ASIN (Atlantic Scholarly Information
Network) Portal project.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS degree or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution is
required, plus two (2) to four (4) years relevant experience.
Knowledge of cataloguing and technical services operations within an
automated integrated library system environment is also essential, as
are a service-oriented approach to librarianship, superior
time-management and organizational skills, and effective written and
verbal communication skills in English.
In addition, any or all of the following would be highly desirable:
knowledge of the law, legal materials (both print and electronic), and
legal research methodology; experience with legal cataloguing and
classification, including use of the KF Modified Classification
scheme; experience with a variety of modules in SIRSI or a similar
integrated library system; familiarity with methods for acquiring and
making accessible government publications and government information;
experience in providing reference consultation and/or bibliographic
instruction; experience with scanning technology and webpage editing.
SALARY:
Librarians are members of the Association of University of New
Brunswick Teachers. Rank and salary are dependent upon experience and
qualifications. An attractive package of benefits, including pension,
health insurance, and tuition benefit is available.
