Children's Programs that WORK for Public Libraries
Speaker: Beth Maddigan
Make storytime work for you! Beth Maddigan will introduce you to the
programming style developed at the Cambridge Libraries and outlined in
the "Big Book of Stories, Songs and Sing-alongs: Programs for Babies,
Toddlers and Families." The approach combines child development
principles with public library goals and resources. Beth will outline a
strategy for successful programming including: guidelines, goals and
objectives for services to very young children; incentives to encourage
at-home reading; and common programming problems and how to avoid them.

Speaker Biography:
Beth Maddigan is the Coordinator of Children's Services for the
Cambridge Libraries, Co-author of "The Big Book of Stories, Songs and
Sing-alongs: Programs for Babies, Toddlers and Families" published by
Libraries Unlimited (June, 2003), an Instructor of "Library Studies
1605: Children's Services", a web-based certificate course run by
Memorial University and an active member of the OPLA Children's Task
Force. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with her
MLIS, Beth began her full-time career as Children's Librarian in
January 1997 with Cambridge Libraries, as the Children's Librarian at
the Queen's Square location and was promoted in 1998 to Children's
Services Coordinator. Cambridge is a system of 4 libraries that
successfully runs 42 children's programs per week!
